Mohamed is a refugee from Somalia, who has been in the Kansas City area for four years and attending ESL. He earned his Forklift Certification a few years ago but wanted to improve his earning potential to better support his family of seven. So he enrolled in Metropolitan Community College, earned his commercial driving license (CDL), and began working as a driver as well as driving for Uber to earn extra money. His brother also earned his CDL license, and together they saved enough money to purchase their own rigs. Last May, the two brothers started their own trucking business, “Midwest Freight Systems”. Mohamed's next goal is to become a homeowner, making his family even more independent. Mohamed’s ESL instructor says of him:
“He is one of the most dedicated students I've worked with, and nearly always attends class - even when he is stuck on the road. If he has a layover on a job, he will attend our Zoom class in the morning via his tablet. One morning, his truck had broken down the night before, and he still attended class - even though he had spent the night in the cab of his truck with no heat. Luckily, a tow truck and mechanic arrived to help him while we were online. I am very proud of Mohamed. He is a true inspiration to all the students, and he's an inspiration to me.”
